Here are some of the astonishing numbers and statistics which act as the motivation behind what we do:
- Every 3rd male student and every 10th female student in Punjab has had drugs on some occasion.
- The percentage of households affected by drug abuse is 61% in Majha, 64% in Malwa and 68% in Doaba.
- Because people are sharing needles, HIV and AIDS are spreading like wildfire. Punjab tops the country when it comes to the transmission of HIV through intravenous drug users: the prevalence in India is 9.19%, but in Punjab it is 26.1% - almost three times the national figure!
- Two lakh (200,000) bottles of liquor are sold in Chandigarh every day and on an average one individual drinks 136 bottles of alcohol each year.
- Roughly 60% of illegal drugs
confiscated in India are seized in Punjab.
- 40% of 15 - 25 year olds have used illegal drugs.
- There are also high levels of alcohol abuse.
- Near border areas the rate of heroin abuse among 15 to 25 year olds is as high as 75%
- Every 4th family in Punjab is affected by addiction in some way.
- 26% of drug addicts are HIV positive.
- 1 death occurs each week from drug addiction in Punjab.
- 1 in 3 males and 1 in 10 females have tried drugs.
- There are a variety of
substances that people are addicted to including Alcohol, Bhukki, Opium,
Morphine, Heroin and much more.
- There are physical and mental health consequences to the individuals and to the society as a whole.
