Substance misuse remains a significant public health challenge across India, with Punjab particularly affected by alcohol and opioid use. India’s national substance-use survey identified Punjab among the states with the highest prevalence of alcohol use and found a particularly high burden of harmful or dependent opioid use in the state.
Nationally, an estimated 16 crore (160 million) people use alcohol, while around 2.26 crore (22.6 million) use opioids. The same national study estimated that approximately 7.2 lakh (720,000) people in Punjab needed help for opioid-related problems.
These figures underline the importance of prevention, education and early intervention. Raising awareness — particularly among children and young people — remains an important part of reducing the harm caused by drug and alcohol misuse.
Prevention starts with education. Young people can encounter messages and pressures around drugs and alcohol long before they fully understand the risks or consequences.
DAAN focuses on reaching children and young people early, providing clear, age-appropriate information that helps them understand the potential effects of substance misuse and make informed choices. Education can also encourage young people to recognise harmful situations, resist peer pressure and know where to seek help.
By working with schools and communities, we aim to build awareness before problems develop and give young people the knowledge and confidence to make healthier choices for their future.
